New Study Shows Link Between Lavish Wedding And Divorce

ExpensiveWedding

The height of wedding season is just a few months away, meaning that many couples are in the middle of planning their special day. Many people feel pressure to spend tens of thousands of dollars on the most beautiful wedding attire, flowers, music, photography, and of course, the food. In 2023, the average cost of a wedding is $29,000, meaning many couples actually go into debt just to tie the knot.

While big, lavish weddings are certainly fun to attend, a troubling trend has emerged from these expensive parties. According to a new study, researchers have found a link between expensive weddings and divorce. Below, our Long Island divorce lawyer explains further.

What the Study Says

The new study comes out of Emory University and it shows that when a couple spends more on not just their wedding ceremonies, but their engagement rings as well, they have a higher chance of divorce.

The study involved 3,151 participants who are currently married, or who once were. According to the data, women who spent more than $20,000 on their wedding were 1.6 times more likely to eventually divorce than women who spent between $5,000 and $10,000. Couples who spent less than $1,000 on their weddings were most likely to have the strongest marriages, as they had the lowest divorce rate of all other couples.

Possible Reasons for the Trend

The researchers who conducted the study did not analyze data pertaining to the reasons for the trend. However, they did note some possible reasons why an expensive wedding could later lead to divorce. As previously stated, the high cost of a wedding could result in a couple going into debt before they are even married. As such, couples who spend thousands of dollars on their wedding may start their life together while under financial strain.

Another one of the study’s authors stated that couples who spent less on their wedding and engagement rings may simply be a better fit for each other than other couples who spend more. Couples who spend less may be an indication that their priority is on getting married, and not having a big party. When a couple is more focused on having a big party and the best of everything, they may lose sight of what is really important that day – their relationship with each other.
